Teaching

I have a couple of decades experience teaching students across a wide range of ages, backgrounds and levels of experience, all the way from complete beginners and university researchers and professional musicians. I have taught on subjects like harmony and analysis, composition, music history, instrumental studies and ensemble performace, as well as computer science and mathematics. I have also had the opportunity to mentor some amazing software developers and data scientists. I have presented in all kinds of settings from informal workshops to formal academic settings. I just love learning new things and sharing them when I can.

After a career break in 2024-5 from corporate life followed by some exciting travels, I decided to formalise my school teaching qualifications and returned to university studies (yet again!) to complete a Master of Teaching degree. This has let me become qualified to teach in both Primary and Secondary settings. As a secondary education teacher, I decided to specialise in Music and History (my first degree, way back when, was in History and Philosophy, and this seemed like a nice break of my decades of math and tech). At the same time, I have returned to work as a musician, composer and researcher, bringing together practical musical experience with my academic and technical. It has been great.

Why do I love teaching? Because I've had the good fortune to learn from amazing teachers and to spend my life exploring all kinds of fascinating ideas. I love sharing knowledge and helping students, whatever their starting point and wherever they are on their learning journey, so they can discover how they learn best and develop a lifelong curiosity about the world. On this page, I try and post useful as I create them or come across them. It is all a bit aspirational, to be sure, and there is not a lot here yet. But bear with me. Learning takes a lifetime.
